KALA RAKSHA, NGO is dedicated to the preservation of traditional textile crafts of Kutch. Over 30 years ago it began with a local group of artisan embroiderers living in the village of Sumrasar Sheikh, north of Bhuj. This social enterprise has grown to provide not only economic opportunities for them with their embroidery but now includes training and health care for hundreds of women artisans from all over Kutch.
Most of these artisans work in their own homes, the finishing completed in the Kala Raksha workshop at Sumrasar Sheikh. They are adept embroiderers and in doing so continue as valuable story tellers and record keepers of their cultures. Where once they worked to create clothing, quilts and covers for their homes and extended families, they have adapted their skills to make a wide range of products destined for an Indian and international market far beyond the local market.
