The shibori top layer of this kantha has been dipped in the indigo vat multiple times to achieve these subtle blue tones. The strong contrast of the deep indigo back has been further enhanced by the use of a strong white running stitch binding all the layers together.

Kantha is a women's folk art of Bangladesh and West Bengal, originally made to upcycle much loved soft discarded saris and dhotis, layering them to create winter quilts and covers: each one unique. To this day women in villagers throughout Bangladesh continue the practice to meet, socialise and stitch, once the the daily chores are completed.

Mishael Ahmed has the experience and acumen, firstly with Living Blue and now with MiAA_house_of_craftsmanship to provide a livelihood for rural women by taking this humble quilt to an international audience of textile connoisseurs, firstly to Europe and North America and now to Australia.

Sustainability matters! These quilts and covers are meticulously handstitched by highly skilled village women using layers of cotton khadi, and natural dyes, particularly indigo, grown by local farmers. Previously a domestic craft, it has become a useful enterprise for rural women to earn a livelihood.

Size: 236 x 194cm

Care Instructions: Do not soak this quilt and do not expose to strong sunlight to retain the intensity of the indigo. It is recommended that you hand-wash your kantha quilt in cold water with a mild detergent. Avoid using harsh detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners as they can damage the delicate fabric and embroidery. A gentle machine wash is possible. Squeeze out excess water and avoid wringing or twisting the quilt. Dry in the shade.
