HANGING BELLS OF KUTCH

$102.00

Forged from waste sheet metal into a cluster of 23 tuned bells, this decorative hanging wall piece is the handwork of Sameer, the youngest of an artisan bellmaker family from Zara Village in Kutch region of North West India. The bellmakers traditionally crafted these bell for the many grazing animals of this region,, allowing herders to differentiate each animal by the tone of the bells worn around their necks.

Each bell is constructed by hammering two sheets of metal to form the bell shape which is then coated in a copper patina in a forge. The bell has a wooden tongue and is tuned to a beautiful tinkling tone with a few final taps of the hammer

As grazing land shrinks in this distant regional area, Sameer is now producing a large range of decorative bells for the home to attract new customers.
